Private airport transfers when selecting Land Only and arranging your own flights
Depart your home airport and arrive at the breath-taking heart of historic Italy -- Rome!
Upon arrival in Rome you’ll be greeted by your tour escort and you’ll board your private motorcoach and depart for Assisi, central artery of the Umbria province, and once home to Italy’s beloved St. Francis. It was here that the monastic Franciscan order began, and throngs of pilgrims pay tribute to its heritage every year. Private Mass at Santo Stefano. Check into your hotel with a chance to rest before your welcome dinner at a local restaurant.
After today’s leisurely breakfast, learn more about St. Francis, patron saint of animals and the environment. Meet your Local Guide and visit the Upper and Lower Basilicas of St. Francis, famous for its 14th-century Giotto frescoes depicting the life of St. Francis, and the Basilica of St. Clare where you’ll have mass, founder of the Order of Poor Clares. After lunch at leisure, we visit as well the Church of San Damiano. It was here that the ‘San Damiano Cross’ hung when it ‘spoke’ to Francis, urging him to “rebuild My Church.” Francis interpreted the dream literally and went to work on repairing the building at San Damiano. Later we continue on to nearby Mt Subasio to visit the Eremo delle Carceri, which was St. Francis’ first retreat where he and his early followers strove to live a humble existence. Here you will also visit the Grotto di San Francesco, with one of the saint’s beds hollowed out from the bedrock. Dinner at hotel restaurant.
Today, after breakfast, walk to St. Francis Lower basilica where you’ll celebrate private Mass, then board the motorcoach to visit Santa Maria degli Angeli. You will ride through the Umbrian country side of Italy and reach Spello for a walking tour of the historical center. Enjoy wine Tasting at Enoteca Properzi. Return to your hotel and enjoy Dinner.
After breakfast leave the hotel to reach Siena, considered by most to be the cradle of Western art for a half day guided walking tour. Once in Siena your escort will lead you to the Piazza del Campo and will introduce you to this ancient Tuscan capital and fascinating art town. This is the site of the most famous “palio” in all of Italy. This race, by men on horseback, is charged with electricity, as competitors race around the town square at a furious pace. Take your time exploring the museums and churches of Siena. Celebrate a private Mass. After a magnificent day in Tuscany, return to your hotel in Siena and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.
Today there is a full-day excursion exploring regional specialties in a trio of towns. Wine and Montepulciano have been linked since 789; the varietal was then sought after by English royalty in 1669. Today's tasting features Vino Nobile, a "noble" red wine blend. In Montalcino, climb the ramparts for a view down from the medieval fortress before perusing the bottles of one of Italy's prized and most expensive red wines: Brunello di Montalcino. Enjoy a tasting before you continue just outside Montalcino to the Abbey of Monteoliveto Maggiore, private Mass and surrender your ears to the magnificent Gregorian Chants before returning to your hotel. Dinner at Monte Oliveto.
After an early breakfast, drive to the medieval city of Orvieto. Reachable only by a funicular, Orvieto is the perfect example of the Umbrian hilltop town. Perched high in the cliffs, Orvieto is steeped in history dating back to the Etruscans, however, its most important attraction is the magnificent Duomo. Here, your local guide will lead you through the cathedral from its stunning façade and large bronze doors to the elegant frescoes. Long considered a gem of early Renaissance architecture, the Duomo of Orvieto still remains one of Italy’s most beautiful cathedrals. Mass in Orvieto Duomo. After a brief lunch at your leisure, drive to Rome to check into your hotel. Based on your arrival time, you will have some time to relax for a walk through Baroque Rome. Take a brief walk to the lively Spanish Steps, before snapping a picture at the elegant Trevi Fountain and end the tour stopping by the flowing fountains of Bernini at the grand Piazza Navona. Dinner in a restaurant in the Vatican area.
After breakfast, attend Mass in St. Peter's Square with Pope Francis(subject to the Pope’s schedule). Time for a short lunch break at leisure. Following lunch, we will visit the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran, then the Basilica of St. Mary Major, with a little stop to visit the Church of Santa Prassede. Dinner at your leisure.
After breakfast, visit the Vatican Museums with your expert guide to explore the various galleries and the Sistine Chapel, decorated with splendid frescoes by Michelangelo. End the morning in St. Peter’s Basilica and his Holy Door, considered one of the greatest works of Renaissance architecture as well as the holiest Catholic shrine. After lunch on your own, transfer to St. Callixtus Catacombs for a guided visit and private Mass. On the way back from the Catacombs, stop and tour of the Basilica San Paolo outside the walls. Return to your Hotel and enjoy your Farewell Dinner.
Transfer to Rome Fiumicino Airport for your flight back home with treasured memories to last a lifetime.
