Travel from Louisville to Rome arriving in Rome on Monday morning.
Upon arrival in Rome you’ll be greeted by your tour escort and you’ll board your private motorcoach to downtown Rome. You will stop in San Paolo outside the walls for a private Mass. Based on your arrival time, you will have some time to relax for a walking tour through the Baroque Rome. Enjoy a brief walk to the lively Spanish Steps, before snapping a picture at the elegant Trevi Fountain and end the tour stopping by the flowing fountains of Bernini at the grand Piazza Navona. Check in to the Star Hotel Metropole. Enjoy your welcome dinner at a local restaurant.
After breakfast, Mass will be celebrated in St. Peter’s Basilica followed by visit to the Vatican Museums with your expert guide to explore the various galleries and the Sistine Chapel decorated with splendid frescoes by Michelangelo. You will end the morning in St. Peter’s Basilica. Enjoy time for a short lunch break at your leisure. Following lunch, we will visit the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran where we’ll have Mass, then the Basilica of St. Mary Major, with a little stop to visit the Church of Santa Prassede. You’ll return to your Hotel for dinner at your leisure.
After breakfast, check out, board your private motor coach and transfer to St. Peter's Basilica to attend Pope Leo XIV papal audience. After independent lunch, board the motor-coach and depart to Termini Station to take the Frecciarossa Highway Train to the Milan Centrale Station. Upon arrival in Milan with your tour escort, board your private motorcoach for a scenic drive to the shores of romantic Lake Maggiore. If your arrival time permits, you’ll visit the Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso, a Catholic monastery perched on Lake Maggiore’s eastern shore, followed by Mass at the Hermitage.
After your hotel breakfast, you’ll reach the dock of Stresa, board a private motorboat and cross over to the family-owned Borromean Islands. You’ll drop anchor at Isola Bella where an immense Baroque palace sits carved out of the island’s base. Its grounds are packed with vibrant gardens of rare tropical plants, and also formal parterres. At midday, you’ll navigate to nearby Isola dei Pescatori for lunch on your own, and later to Isola Madre to stroll through its five interconnecting gardens set in fragrant woodlands, where you’ll discover an inviting oasis of tranquility. Board the private motorlaunch and transfer to Santa Caterina del Sasso, a Catholic monastery perched on Lake Maggiore's eastern shore with Mass at the Hermitage. In the late afternoon, return to Stresa for dinner at your leisure.
After a leisurely hotel breakfast, you’ll depart for the rolling hills of Piedmont at the foot of the lower Alps. Here you’ll spend your day exploring the vineyards of Gattinara area, which boast prized wines under the prestigious DOCG label. Visit a wine cellar followed by a tasting of the town’s specialty. After lunch you’ll head to Lake Orta, a small gem often referred to as the “secret little sister” of Lakes Maggiore and Como. After a short boat ride from the jetty of Orta San Giulio, you’ll find yourself on San Giulio Island, housing an ancient basilica and 19th-century seminary. Late in the afternoon you’ll ride back to Stresa for dinner at your leisure Mass will be in Stresa.
After breakfast, you’ll travel to the bustling cosmopolitan city of Milan. Enjoy an in-depth guided tour of the city, viewing its most important monuments, including La Scala Theatre, the Duomo where you will participate in Mass, and the Galleria. After lunch on your own, visit the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana to view Leonardo's celebrated Codex Atlanticus, and other masterpieces of his, such as the Portrait of a Musician, in addition to works by Caravaggio and Raphael to name a few. You’ll then travel back to Stresa for dinner with the group at the hotel.
After today’s breakfast, don’t forget to bring your passport before leaving for Domodossola at the foot of the Simplon Pass, deep in a famous Alpine valley, where you’ll board the Centovalli Train. You’ll ride straight through the Centovalli (Hundred Valleys) region from Domodossola, Italy to Locarno, Switzerland in just two hours. You'll have some time to stroll through the ancient downtown district in Locarno, around the Piazza Grande, and enjoy a group lunch. Mass will be celebrated in Locarno. Late in the afternoon you’ll ride back to Stresa for dinner at your leisure.
After today’s leisurely breakfast and lunch in the afternoon, you’ll head off to visit a local restaurant for a cooking class on gnocchi (potatoes dumplings)! You’ll then enjoy eating all of the classic dishes including wines from the region and have your Farewell dinner with everyone in your group who have become cherished friends. Return to your hotel, with the rest of the day free to use as you wish.
Transfer to Milan Malpensa airport for your flight back home.
